FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) - SMU's Gaston Cuadranti fought a long and challenging match against TCU's Nick Chappell, ultimately falling 5-7; 6-2; 7-6.
Cuadranti won his first three matches of the tournament heading into Monday. Cuadranti rallied back from five opposing match points and also had four of his own.
"He played his best at the end," Head Coach Carl Neufeld said of the straining amount of tennis Cuadranti played over three days. "That shows he's got great fitness, and he's where he needs to be."
Cuadranti defeated Texas A&M freshman (and No. 2 rated recruit in the nation) Shane Vinsant, 6-3; 6-2, in his first match on Sunday. Vinsant was the top-rated recruit from the state of Texas in the 2012 class. Vinsant had a stellar junior career, including advancing to the finals of the Roland Garros Junior Championships in Paris, France, in doubles in 2011.
Cuadranti followed that performance with a win over the fifth-seed in the tournament, Texas' David Holiner. Holiner is currently ranked No. 99 in the nation in singles. Cuadranti defeated the Longhorns junior 3-6; 6-3; 6-1.
Chappell, a sophomore, was the Mountain West's Freshman of the Year last season.
