FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) - SMU sophomore Arturs Kazijevs defeated the top seed on Saturday in what was a successful first day for the Mustangs' top players at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships.
Kazijevs defeated Mate Zsiga of Baylor, the No. 7 singles player in the nation, 7-5; 6-2. Zsiga was the top seed and favorite to take the singles championship at the Texas Regional. Fellow Mustang Gaston Cuadranti, the 22-seed at the event, also won his first day match. Cuadranti beat Stefan Williams of UT Arlington after falling behind after the first set, 3-6; 6-3; 6-1.
"It was a great day," Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. "Our top players had a great day and had breakthrough matches."
