PLANO, Texas (SMU) - Freshman Nate Lammons won his group at the Collin County Invitational in Plano, Texas, over the weekend, leading SMU to a successful and educational weekend.
Lammons, a freshman, won the fourth flight over Southeastern Oklahoma's Martin Bedecarratz, the former No. 2 under-18 player in Chile. Lammons fought off being down five match points to win the event 6-3, 5-7, 14-12.
"Improving isn't linear," Head Coach Carl Neufeld said about Lammons' continued growth. "It takes jumps. Lammons had one of those breakthroughs and made a couple big jumps. He showed great composure."
Overall, SMU's freshmen won seven of their eight matches, with Lammons winning four and Evan Bechtel taking three. Mischa Nowicki lost in the semifinals to the eventual winner in his group. Nowicki was up 6-5 in the second set serving for match point, but ultimately fell in three sets. Ross Peets also lost in the semifinals of his group after winning his previous two matches of the weekend.
"It was a great tournament," Neufeld said. "It's the only collegiate tournament near Dallas. It was great to get good competition for the guys."
SMU will next head out to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Texas Regionals, hosted by TCU, on Oct. 20-23.
