TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki advanced to the third qualifying round of the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The SMU squad defeated Joao Gauer and Cristian Gonazalez-Mendez of Florida State on Tuesday evening.
SMU sophomore-junior duo defeated the Seminoles pair 8-5. Kazijev and Nowicki had a first round bye for Tuesday morning, as did Florida State. Kazijevs was selected to the All-Conference USA Second Team for doubles last season with former teammate Tobias Flood. Kazijevs was also named Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Year last season. Nowicki was 5-9 last year in doubles (primarily playing No.1 or No. 3) and 6-4 as a freshman in 2010-11.
Gauer, from Brazil, and Gonzalez-Mendez, from Spain, were two of the top international players going into their Florida State careers. Gauer was Parana state champion at the Interfederation Cup and earned one ATP point at the Brazil F38 in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo. Gonzalez-Mendez was 2009 ITF Junior Leiria G4 singles and doubles champion and also won the 2009 ITF Junior Vila do Conde G3 doubles championship.
Kazijevs and Nowicki will play Francisco Dias and Alex van-Gils of George Washington University tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
