ABILENE, Texas (SMU) - SMU senior Alex Sanders won the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted by Abilene Christian University this weekend, beating five area opponents on his way to the victory.
Sanders, the No. 1 seed at the event, defeated William Jou in the second round after receiving a first round bye. Sanders beat Jou in straight sets 6-4; 6-2, earning a third round meeting with Rayce Robertson. Sanders went on to win in straight sets again, 6-3; 6-1, to advance to the semifinals.
Sanders' quarterfinal opponent, Jake Hendrie, is going into his freshman year at Saint Louis after being ranked the fifth-best recruit in the state of Texas for the 2013 class. Sanders managed to take care of business against Hendrie, winning 6-2; 4-6; 10-5.
Sanders would face another top recruit in the semifinals, going against Chris Humphreys. Humphreys is heading to Elon for the 2013-14 season and was the No. 1 ranked high school player in New Mexico. Sanders was able to take the title in comeback fashion, winning 5-7; 6-2; 10-8.
TCU's Will Stein faced Sanders in the final Monday morning. Stein, a junior, went 4-6 in singles and 18-5 in doubles in 2012-13, earning a spot on the All-Big 12 doubles team. Sanders cruised to victory, earning a 6-3; 6-3 win.
