Mustangs Fall To Rice In Regular Season Finale, 4-2
April 13, 2014
FRISCO, Texas (SMU) - After rainy conditions forced a three-hour delay, the SMU Mustangs and Rice Owls played nearly four hours of singles before Rice ultimately took the victory, 4-2, at the Lakes Tennis Academy on Sunday.
SMU finishes the regular season at 10-12, while Rice improved to 9-12. After the delay, the two teams agreed to play singles first and use doubles as a tiebreaker if necessary.
Rice took the match lead with a win at No. 3 singles, as Max Andrews topped SMU's Mischa Nowicki in straight sets. Nate Lammons knotted the match at 1-1 for SMU with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Gustavo Gonzalez at No. 5. Freshman Arkidjas Slobodkins gave SMU the lead with his win at No. 6 over Henrik Munch; 7-6, 6-2.
The Owls tied the match with a win at No. 4 singles, and then took a 3-2 lead with Srikar Alla winning at No. 1 singles over No. 108-ranked Arturs Kazijevs of SMU.
SMU senior Alex Sanders took the first set at No. 2 singles over Adam Gustafsson, 7-5. With all other matches already decided, Gustafsson came back to take the second set, 7-5. In the decisive third set, both players utilized break points to get advantage, but Gustafsson's break to take a 6-5 lead in the set proved vital. Gustafsson would win the set, 7-5, and clinch the match for Rice.
Lammons' win gives him 12 for the spring and 17 overall for the 2013-14 season. The sophomore has won seven of his last nine decisions and is on a three-match win streak. Slobodkins is now 10-9 on the season, with a 4-2 mark at No. 6 singles.
The Mustangs will now focus on the American Athletic Conference Championships, which will begin on Friday at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The championships will conclude Sunday.
