DALLAS (SMU) – Gaston Cuadranti earned his team-leading 11th win of the season in the No. 1 singles flight, but it wasn’t enough as the SMU men’s tennis team was defeated 5-2 by No. 43 Notre Dame at Northwood Country Club.
SMU (9-10) started the day strong, sweeping doubles play to claim the match’s first point. Cuadranti and Joseph Hattrup earned the first win by defeating Sam Keeton and Billy Pecor, 8-3, in the third flight. At No. 1, Pablo Perez-Esnaola and Mischa Nowicki followed up by knocking off Casey Watt and Niall Fitzgerald, 8-5, to take the point. Tobias Flood and Arturs Kazijevs finished off the sweep by defeating Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmadge, 8-7, at No. 2.
The Mustangs were unable to take advantage of the lead though as Cuadranti was the only SMU player to pick up a win in singles play. The senior notched his 10th win of the season in the No. 1 spot, and 11th overall when he knocked off Casey Watt, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. SMU was edged out in three sets at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5.
The Mustangs will host rival TCU in the regular-season finale on April 17 at Northwood Country Club at 2 p.m. CT.
