March 31, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU tallied its second win over a ranked team this spring with a 4-2 defeat of No. 61 Idaho at the Samuell Grand Tennis Center on Sunday. Arturs Kazijevs earned his fifth straight singles victory, improving his record to 9-4.
The Mustangs' (7-7) defeat of Idaho (18-3) caps off a sweep of their three-match homestand. SMU beat Marquette 6-1 on Friday and downed Oklahoma State 4-3 on Saturday. SMU is 7-3 in its last 10 matches.
"It was another good win today against another nationally-ranked team," Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. "It was a good weekend for our team, playing three tough matches in three days and going 3-0. This will serve us well as we move closer to championship season."
SMU didn't waste time snagging the doubles point, winning the first two matches quickly. The 75th-ranked duo of Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki took an 8-5 decision against Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea, while Gaston Cuadranti and Alex Sanders defeated Cristobal Ramos and Jose Bendeck 8-3. The Mustangs are now 19-14 in doubles this season.
Kazijevs, Cuadranti and Nate Lammons all provided singles victories for the Mustangs. Kazijevs and Cuadranti won in straight sets, while Lammons bounced back from a tiebreak loss in his second set to win the third frame 6-0. Nowicki and Cuadranti have each won their last three decisions.
SMU's next match will be at the University of Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday at 10 a.m. That meeting is the start of a three-match road trip for the Mustangs.
