Nowicki snaps Goodwin's eight-match win streak

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU men's tennis team earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season as the team defeated No. 65 Southern Miss, 5-2, this afternoon at the Jewish Community Center. The Mustangs improved to 5-5 on the year and 1-0 in Conference USA, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in C-USA.
The Ponies wasted no time in claiming the doubles point, sweeping doubles play. Gaston Cuadranti and Pablo Perez-Esnaola blanked Matt Frost and Brad Marriott in the No. 1 flight, while Joseph Hattrup and Robert Sajovich defeated Andrew Goodwin and Michael Elortegui, 8-5, at No. 3 and Arturs Kazijevs and Tobias Flood topped Juan Escobar and Inaki Belloso, 8-6.
Cuadranti and Kazijevs added to their team-leading singles marks as both picked up their sixth win of the season. Both earned straight-set victories, coming out strong with 6-0 first sets. Kazijevs finished of his win with a 6-3 second set against Belloso in the No. 3 flight, while Cuadranti edged out Frost, 7-6, in the top flight.
Perez-Esnaola and Nowicki also notched straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4. Perez-Esnaola defeated Paulo Alavardo 6-4, 6-3, and Nowicki snapped Goodwin's eight-match win streak, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Next up for SMU will be back-to-back matches on March 19 as the team will host Prairie View A&M and UIC beginning at 2 p.m. CT, at the Jewish Community Center.
