Mustangs Defeat Radford, 5-2
March 12, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs earned their fourth win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Radford at the Samuell Grand Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
SMU has now won four of its last six matches, a stretch that dates back to Feb. 2. Freshman Nate Lammons won his fifth straight singles match and Arturs Kazijevs also earned his fifth win of the season, all in the No. 1 position.
"The team came out with a lot of energy," Head Coach Carl Neufeld said of his squad. "We played a good match. We're glad we won."
The Mustangs secured the doubles point promptly. Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki combined to beat Radford's Thomas Dehaen and Nicholas Sayer, 8-3. The top Radford duo had previously been ranked as high as 44th nationally. Lammons and Pablo Perez-Esnaola won their match 8-1 to gain the first point of the match for SMU.
Kazijevs, Lammons and Eduardo Razzeto all won their singles matches in straight sets. Perez-Esnaola fought back from a 4-6 loss in the first set to win in three. SMU's two losses both came in 10-point tiebreakers - Gaston Cuadranti lost 10-6 in the final set and Nowicki fell 11-9.
Perez's comeback left an impression on the coaching staff, and they were very proud of the junior.
"I'm very pleased for Pablo, he had a big breakthrough today," Neufeld said.
Radford has won the Big South regular season title six of the last seven seasons.
The Mustangs' next match will be next Tuesday at home against 34th-ranked Columbia at the Samuell Grand Tennis Center.
