CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs picked up an early win over Western Michigan, 4-1, in the first round of the HEB Tournament of Champions, but then dropped their first match in the winner's bracket to former conference foe Tulane, 4-1, in the afternoon. SMU will play Louisiana-Lafayette in the third-place match tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT.

The Mustangs quickly picked up the doubles point against Western Michigan, taking doubles matches No. 1 (Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki) and No. 2 (Alex Sanders and Nate Lammons). Kazijevs, Sanders and Lammons all recorded singles victories while the Mustangs only dropped one match at the No. 5 spot to defeat the Broncos, 4-1.

SMU's match versus Tulane began with singles play, and the Green Wave were victorious at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles with the Mustangs' lone point coming from Lammons' win at the sixth position over Alex Van Cott, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lammons is now 4-1 at No. 6 singles this season.

After Friday, SMU's record is 6-6 for the spring. Louisiana-Lafayette won its first match on Friday over DePaul, 4-0, and then dropped its afternoon meeting with South Alabama, 4-2. 

The HEB Tournament of Champions is in its 48th season and is the longest collegiate team tennis tournament in the nation. The event is hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the HEB Tennis Center and the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
