Ponies Have Strong Second Day At A&M

The SMU men's swimming and diving team did well in their second day of competition at the Texas A&M Invite, taking two events and placing highly in several others.

In the one meter diving competition, senior Beau Sydes took second, giving the Mustangs 17 points. Fellow senior Chad Chokel placed eighth in the event, adding 11 points to the Mustangs' total.

The SMU A team (Eric Hadley, Per Nylin, Camilo Becerra and Ferdi Postma) placed third in the 200 yard medley relay in a time of 1:33.03. The Mustang C team placed eighth and the B team followed in ninth place.

Ian Clark took first place in the 400 yard IM in a time of 3:58.52. Teammate Justin Smith came in second in a time of 4:02.90.

Camilo Becerra won the 100 yard butterfly in 48:35. Brett Denham placed sixth in the event in a time of 52.19. Ferdi Postma placed third in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:40.90; J.D. White followed in sixth in a time of 1:43.73.

Per Nylin placed fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke event in a time of 57.11. Camilo Becerra and Ian Clark placed third and sixth, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke, in times of 50.77 and 51.16.

In the 800 yard freestyle relay competition, the SMU A team (Ferdi Postma, Camilo Becerra, J.D. White and Ian Clark) placed second in a time of 6:51.45. The SMU B team placed seventh in the event, while the C team placed eighth.

Competition continues Sunday in College Station.
