Eleven Mustangs Earn All-American Athletic Conference Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AAC/SMU) -- Eleven SMU swimming & diving student-athletes have been named to the 2014 All-American Athletic Conference men's swimming and diving team. They are seniors Nicolai Hansen, Ryan Koops, Ramom Melo and Matt Roney, juniors Matas Andriekus, Devin Burnett, Hayden Hodges and Tyler Rauth, sophomore Eastman Holloway and freshmen Ziga Cerkovnik and Bryce Klein. The accolades came from three diving events, two swimming races and four relay races. In addition to earning this accolade, Burnett was named the 2014 Most Outstanding Diver as he placed first in the one-meter (386.80), three-meter (389.45) and platform dives (399.65).
"It was a tremendous weekend," the 2014 AAC's Men's Diving Coach of the Year Jim Stillson said. "I don't know how we could have asked for a much better meet with having each of our divers performing extremely well."
Also earning all-conference honors for the Mustang divers were Klein and Hodges. Klein finished second in both the one-meter (376.60) and three-meter dives (379.90), while Hodges placed second in the platform dive (322.35) and third in both the one-meter (346.95) and three-meter dives (379.90) to be selected.
"Devin really stepped up and set the standard very high with his outstanding performances," Stillson continued. "But Bryce and Hayden were each tremendous and very consistent. We are all very excited to compete to in the NCAA qualifying event in two weeks."
Hansen and Melo are the lone Mustang swimmers to be named as they competed in the 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle, respectively. In the 200-yard IM, Hansen placed third and clocked a personal-record time of 1:47.06. In the 50-yard freestyle, Melo finished third and had a personal-best time as well as he ended the race in 19.91 seconds.
SMU had four relay teams garner all-conference honors as the Mustangs placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (Melo, Hansen, Cerkovnik, Andriekus; 1:27.26), 200-freestyle relay (Cerkovnik, Melo, Koops, Roney; 1:19.16) and 400-yard freestyle relay (Cerkovnik, Melo, Hansen, Koops; 2:55.75) and third in the 800-yard freestyle relay (Hansen, Rauth, Roney, Holloway; 6:34.26).
Hansen, Melo and the 200-yard medley relay team all posted NCAA `B' standard qualifying times.
