No. 17 Mustangs Fall, 1-0, To UCF
DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 17 SMU men's soccer team suffered it's first loss in nine games (8-0-1) Sunday night as the Mustangs were defeated by UCF, 1-0, at the UCF Soccer Complex. With the loss, SMU moves to 8-3-2 on the season and is now 4-1 in Conference USA action. The Knights improve to 5-4-3 (2-1 C-USA).

Looking Ahead...

Following the UCF contest, the Mustangs' final two road games are set for Oct. 23 at Memphis and Oct. 26 at USF, and the regular season closes out on Nov. 2 when UConn comes to campus. SMU looks to host a quarterfinal match as a top four seed in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Tournament, but the institution will host the semifinals and final at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, regardless.

Back On The Hilltop...

SMU returns to campus for the first of two home matches that close out the 2013 regular season. The final match is a Nov. 2 date with UConn. The Mustangs are 1-2-1 overall this season at Westcott, and look to grab their first conference victory on their home pitch against UCF on Saturday. In 2012, SMU finished 6-0-4 in home matches.

Vazquez Earns Hat Trick Of Awards...

Sophomore Leobardo Vazquez's standout performance in the 3-1 victory over American opponent Cincinnati earned him a trio of awards on the national and conference level. The South Houston, Texas, native was one of 11 student-athletes selected to the topdrawersoccer.com National Team of the Week, and was honored as the conference Offensive Player of the Week. Dallassoccernews.com also named him its Player of the Week. Vazquez is tied for a team-leading three goals this season.

The American Ranks...

Senior goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra ranks fourth in the American Athletic Conference in saves (43) and saves per game (3.58). Sophomore Alfred Koroma is tied for fourth on the match winners list with a pair, while freshman Deshawon Nembhard is tied for seventh in assists (3) and tied for eighth in assists per game (.250).

Around The Conference...

No. 7 Louisville continues its run as The American's top team boasting a 4-0 conference record. After starting the season as the conference favorite, UConn has bounced back with a pair of wins in its last two league games, following an 0-0-3 start. The Mustangs sit tied at 2-1-1 in conference matches with their Saturday opponent UCF, while Memphis and Rutgers have also picked up a pair of wins in The American. USF sits at 1-1-2 and Temple and Cincinnati are still winless.

Taking Notice...

Senior Jaime Ibarra, sophomore Leobardo Vazquez and Alfred Koroma and freshman Deshawon Nembhard have all caught the attention of The American this season. Ibarra was named the conference Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 23, Vazquez the aforementioned Offensive Player of The Week on Oct. 14 and Nembhard was named the Rookie of the Week on Sept. 16. Koroma has also made the conference honor roll on several occasions.

Scouting The Knights...

UCF enters the Saturday match-up with a 5-4-3 overall record and a 2-1-1 conference mark. In their latest contest, the Knights earned a 5-1 victory over non-conference opponent Georgia State at home.

Sophomore Romario Williams leads UCF with 16 points (7g, 2a) in 2013, while senior Omar Vallejo is also in double digits with 10 (4g, 2a). Junior Sebastian Evers and freshman Zach Biggs have split time in goal this season and have a combined 36 saves and a 1.03 goals-against-average.

Series History...

SMU is 3-3-2 all-time against the Knights. The Mustangs have dropped their last three matches with UCF, including a 1-0 setback in Orlando in 2012. SMU's last victory came in a 2-0 road match on Oct. 25, 2008.

Looking Back...

The Mustangs are coming off a 3-1 road victory at league foe Cincinnati. SMU went down, 1-0, in the 20th minute before sophomore Leobardo Vazquez scored goals in the 58th, 59th and 63rd minutes to lead the Ponies to their second American win this season.

Kick It Forward...

Saturday serves as the Mustangs' "Kick it Forward" match. The team is showing its support for the Dallas community by collecting new or gently used soccer balls. Each fan who donates a soccer ball will receive one complimentary ticket to the match. The first 25 fans who donate will receive a free Mustang Mania t-shirt.
