DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's soccer players Jaime Ibarra and Tyler Engel have earned weekly honors after helping the Mustangs open Conference USA action with wins over South Carolina and No. 23 UAB.
Ibarra was tabbed the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after saving 17 shots and helping the team to a 2-0 mark in league play. Monday, SMU defeated South Carolina, 2-1, at Westcott Field, as Ibarra made seven saves on the night for the Mustangs. Saturday, SMU shut out No. 23 UAB on the road. Ibarra recorded 10 stops en route to his third shutout of the season. The junior has allowed only two goals in the past five games, stopping two penalty kicks in that span. The award is the third of Ibarra's career and second of the season. Ibarra was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Engel was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week after netting two goals in 75 seconds on Sept. 24 against South Carolina. Engel's first tally came at 33:38. Freshman Derek Schrick sent a long through pass up the field to Engel, who dribbled past two defenders and chipped the ball over South Carolina goalkeeper Alex Long and in for a 1-0 lead. Engel doubled the score with a nearly identical goal just 75 seconds later. Sophomore Andrew Morales fed a ball up the middle to Engel who deked a defender and sent the ball to the lower right corner. Engel leads the Mustangs in points (11), goals (4) and game-winning goals (3).
The Mustangs return to Westcott Field to host conference rival Tulsa at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. All tickets for the game are $1 and can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME.
