The Mustangs went 0-2 last weekend at the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Classic. SMU started the weekend with a 1-0 setback to SIU Edwardsville, which was receiving votes in the NSCAA weekly poll. Senior forward Juan Castillo led the Mustangs with three shots in the contest, including one on frame, and sophomore forward Leobardo Vazquez added the team's other shot on goal. Despite the loss, SMU held an 8-6 advantage in shots. Senior Jaime Ibarra went the distance in the net and registered a pair of saves.
In SMU's 1-0 loss to Ohio State, Juan Castillo once again provided a hefty amount of the Mustang attack. The Kingwood, Texas, native tallied three shots, two of which were on goal . Sophomore forward Alfred Koroma also had a pair on frame, and fellow sophomore midfielder Brenden Lee chipped in with one. SMU outshot the Buckeyes 10-2 in the match.
Home Field Advantage...
In 2012, SMU went 2-0 in the Jason's Deli SMU Invitational with a 1-0 (OT) victory over Oakland, and a 1-0 decision over UC Davis. Jaime Ibarra was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and current junior midfielder Damian Rosales was also selected to the all-tournament team.
The Mustangs are 42-11-4 in the invite since its inception in 1987.
Scouting The Hawks...
Hartwick enters the SMU Invitational with an 0-2-2 record for 2013. The Hawks tied their first match of the season, 1-1, with Fairfield before dropping a 2-0 decision to then-No. 20 Syracuse. Last weekend, HC went 0-1-1 in its own tournament after a 1-1 draw with Robert Morris and a 2-1 loss to Cornell.
Sophomore midfielder David Styles (1g, 2a) and senior back Will Broomfield (2g) lead the team in points, while junior Mateo Munarriz has registered 13 saves and a 1.30 goals-against-average for the Hawks.
2013 will be the first meeting between the Mustangs and the Hawks.
Scouting The Roos...
UMKC is 0-2-1 entering its match with No. 13 Tulsa at the SMU Invitational this weekend. The Roos will take on the Golden Hurricane before facing the Mustangs on Sunday. UMKC's setbacks came at the hands of Memphis (1-0) and Central Arkansas (3-0). The draw was a 1-1 match against Wisconsin.
Sophomore midfielder Derek Schrick leads the Roos with a goal this season, and senior back Jeffrey Stezovsky has an assist. Senior Kevin Corby and junior Chris McGaughey each have two games under their belt in the net with a combined 10 saves and a 1.55 goals-against-average.
SMU is 2-0 all-time against UMKC. The last meeting between the teams was a 2-1 decision on Sept. 24, 2006 at UMKC.
SMU's first American match at Rutgers (Sept. 20) is part of a three-match road swing, which includes non-conference matches at No. 10 Washington (Sept. 27) and Portland (Sept. 29). No. 16 Louisville comes to the Hilltop on Oct. 6, with the remainder of the conference season to follow, and the regular season closes out on Nov. 2 when No. 3 UConn comes to campus. SMU looks to take the No. 1 seed in the inaugural American Tournament, but will host the semifinal and finals in Frisco, Texas, regardless.
Around The Conference...
Memphis and Temple currently sit atop the American standings with 3-1 and 3-0 marks, respectively. No. 3, and conference preseason favorite UConn, is just behind them at 2-0-1.
