DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team opens the 2013 season at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic where it will face NSCAA preseason No. 1 Indiana and No. 7 Notre Dame.
The Last Meeting
September 8, 2006
Time For The Real Deal...
The Mustangs closed out the exhibition portion of their schedule with a 2-2 draw with Houston Baptist. Senior Juan Castillo and freshman Stanton Garcia both scored in the match, while senior Jaime Ibarra, sophomore Oshick Shams and freshman Michael Nelson split time in the net.
New Team, New Conference...
The 2013 Mustangs were tabbed fourth in the first American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. SMU follows preseason No. 5 UConn, No. 10 Louisville and USF, who is receiving votes in the poll. Rutgers, Memphis, UCF, Cincinnati and Temple round out the group.
Let The Awards Begin...
Junior midfielder Damian Rosales was a unanimous selection for the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team. The Dallas native played in 18 matches for the Mustangs in 2012 and registered three assists. As a freshman, Rosales picked up two goals and a pair of assists.
They Don't Stop There...
Damian Rosales and sophomore Jacob Speed were named American Athletic Conference First-Team preseason selections by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Speed, a transfer from Kentucky, saw action in 21 matches for the Wildcats in 2012. Senior Jaime Ibarra and junior Andrew Morales were second team selections for SMU. Morales had four goals and four assists last season, and Ibarra ranked 10th in NCAA Division I in total saves (99).
Scouting the Hoosiers...
The 2012 national champion Indiana Hoosiers are first up for the Mustangs at the IU Credit Union Classic. IU topped Georgetown, 1-0, in 2012 to take the crown. Despite losing their 2012 point leader and All-American Eriq Zavaleta (18g, 4a) to the professional ranks, the Hoosiers return their next three point leaders. Seniors Nikita Kotlov (9g, 4a) and A.J. Corrado (1g, 12a) and sophomore Femi Hollinger-Janzen (4g, 1a) will all be back in the lineup this season. IU will also see a new face in the net after senior Luis Soffner, who played every minute in 2012, graduated. The Hoosiers started 2013 with a pair of exhibitions contests against preseason No. 12 Marquette (D, 3-3) and No. 4 North Carolina (L, 1-0). SMU is 3-2-2 all-time against IU, with the last meeting going to the Mustangs, 1-0, in 2006.
Scouting the Fighting Irish...
Notre Dame finished the 2012 season as the No. 8 team in the country sporting a 17-4-1 record. The Fighting Irish eventually fell in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to IU, 2-1, in two overtimes. Two of ND's top point getters return in 2013. Senior Harrison Shipp registered six goals and six assists, while sophomore Patrick Hodan tallied six goals and five assists. In Notre Dame's three exhibition contests they picked up a pair of wins over Drake, 2-0, and Ohio State, 1-0, and fell 1-0 to No. 6 Creighton. The Mustangs are 2-1-1 all-time against the Fighting Irish. SMU fell 4-1 in the last meeting in 2005.
Six home matches highlight the Mustangs' 2013 schedule, including four against opponents from the new American Athletic Conference. Following the IU Credit Union Classic, the Mustangs travel to Tulsa for their second tournament. The Jason's Deli SMU Invitational is up next for the squad on Sept. 13 and 15. SMU's first American match at Rutgers is part of a three-match road swing, which includes non-conference matches at Washington and Portland. Louisville comes to the Hilltop on Oct. 6 to start the conference season, and the regular season closes out on Nov. 2 when UConn comes to campus. SMU looks to take the No. 1 seed in the inaugural American Tournament, but will host the semifinal and finals in Frisco, Texas, regardless.
