Men's Soccer Set For Exhibition Match With Oral Roberts

Dallas (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team kicks off preseason action on Sunday when it hosts Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. at Westcott Field. Admission to the match is free.

The Mustangs, who finished the 2012 campaign 10-5-5 and 6-2 in Conference USA, will use the match as the first of a pair of tune-ups before traveling to No. 1 Indiana University to open the regular season on Aug. 30 at the IU Credit Union Classic.

SMU returns 14 letter winners from last season, and adds 16 newcomers to the lineup. Five of the fresh faces are transfers to the program and are all eligible to make an immediate impact during the 2013.

Match Notes

Looking Back...

The Mustangs fell in penalty kicks to Winthrop in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The teams each netted a goal in regulation, the Mustangs' coming from Eddie Puskarich in the 48th minute. Winthrop came through with the equalizer with 2:10 remaining in regulation and chalked up a 3-1 victory in penalty kicks.

Conference USA Champs...

With one game remaining in the 2012 schedule, the Mustangs clinched the regular season championship with a 6-1 conference mark. It was the second consecutive year SMU took the title. The Mustangs went on to finish 6-2 in conference, but eventually fell in the C-USA Tournament Championship to Tulsa.

Player of the Year...

Jaime Ibarra was honored as the 2012 C-USA co-Player of the Year with fellow goalkeeper Daniel Withrow of Marshall. As of Nov. 6, Ibarra led the conference during C-USA matches in goals against average (0.75), save percentage (0.880) and was tied for the lead in shutouts (4). He and his counterpart also had a conference-leading 44 saves during league play. Ibarra finished the season playing every minute for the Mustangs and racked up 99 saves and a 1.12 GAA. He also posted six shutouts and a .805 save percentage.

Conference Honors...

Head Coach Tim McClements earned himself Coach of the Year accolades, while Tyler Engel, T.J. Nelson, Damian Rosales and Aaron Simmons were named to the second team. Andrew Morales earned third-team honors and John Lujano and Michael King rounded out the honors after being named to the all-freshman team.

Scouting the Golden Eagles...

Oral Roberts finished the 2012 season 4-13, and 2-5 in Summit League action. The Golden Eagles return junior Tom Adams, who tied for the team's lead in points last season with 11 (5g, 1a).

Looking Ahead...

Six home matches highlight the Mustangs' 2013 schedule, including four against opponents from the new American Athletic Conference. Following SMU's second exhibition contest against Houston Baptist on Aug. 24, the Mustangs take to the road for a pair of tournaments at Indiana and Tulsa. The Jason's Deli SMU Invitational is up next for the squad on Sept. 13 and 15. SMU's first AAC match at Rutgers is part of a three-match road swing, which includes non-conference matches at Washington and Portland. Louisville comes to the Hilltop on Oct. 6 to start the conference season, and the regular season closes out on Nov. 2 when UConn comes to campus.

SMU looks to take the No. 1 seed in the inaugural AAC Tournament, but will host the semifinal and finals in Frisco, Texas, regardless.

Jordan Mann Alumni Match...

The Mustangs will host the Seventh Annual Jordan Mann Alumni Match following the Aug. 24 exhibition contest against Houston Baptist. The match will begin at 5 p.m. with the alumni match to follow immediately after at 7 p.m. All alumni are welcome to play and friends of the program are encouraged to attend the social that follows.
