DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs have announced the addition of 11 student-athletes as its 2013 freshmen class, and the coaching staff expects the class to perform at a high level.

"We're really excited about this year's incoming class," Head Coach Tim McClements said. "We feel these players can come in and make an immediate impact on the field. This group addresses our immediate needs and we're excited to get them on the field."

The 2013 class includes four players that are rated among the top 150 incoming freshmen in the nation by various media outlets.

Biographical information for all 11 incoming freshmen is below.

Marco Carrizales | MF | Dallas, Texas

Played club soccer for FC Dallas Development Academy under former SMU soccer great Luchi Gonzales ... Club team won the USSDA National Championship in 2012... Played at FC Dallas with fellow 2013 recruit Abdul Yassine and Caleb Underwood... Participated in the U15 and U17 United States Youth National Team pools... Rated the No. 120 recruit in the nation by topdrawersoccer.com

Stanton Garcia | MF/F | McKinney, Texas

Played for Andromeda FC under coaches Jay Dane and Aaron Jacob and McKinney High School ... Rated the No. 147 recruit in the nation by topdrawersoccer.com... Earned TASCA All-State honors and THSCAA All-State Honorable Mention... Earned all-district honorable mention recognition his freshman and sophomore years... Helped lead McKinney High School to the Region II quarterfinals in 2010-11 and a 20-1-1 record... Was captain of Andromeda FC U18.

James "Brody" Hickey | MF/D | Wylie, Texas

Played club soccer for the Dallas Texans under Coach David Hudgell...Won Newcomer of the Year, Offensive MVP and was first-team all-district while at Wylie High School... Was a member of the U14-U17 United States Youth National Teams and took part in the U17 residency program... Rated the No. 92 player in the nation according to CollegeSoccerNews.com  and the No. 142 player according to topdrawercoccer.com ... Older brother Payton played soccer at SMU from 2008-11.


 

 

Anthony Jeffries | MF | Downers Grover, Ill.

Played club soccer for the Chicago Fire Academy, captaining the team in 2011 and 2012... Member of the U14, U15 and U17 United States Youth National Teams and attended the residency program... Played at Downers Grove North High School, earning all-conference and all-sectional honors in 2010 while captaining the team... Led school to a regional championship in 2010... Was an Illinois State Scholar... Is the No. 12 player in the Midwest region and rated 97th nationally by CollegeSoccerNews.com ... Father Mike played five years professionally and earned three caps for the United States National Team in 1984-85.

Benjamin Joseph | MF | Austin, Texas

Played for Lonestar SC Academy and St. Stephen's Episcopal School ... Was part of the U15 United States Youth National Team pool... Captained Lonestar SC from 2006-13... Took part in the 2008 US Soccer Id2 National Development program and was on the South Texas ODP State Team in 2007 and 2008... Helped team win the 2009 Disney Showcase and the 2007 Denver Cup.

Deshawon Nembhard | D/MF | Dallas, Texas

Played for Solar Chelsea U18 in the United States Soccer Developmental Academy and Saint Mark's School of Texas ... Helped guide Solar Chelsea to a second place finish in the Central Conference of the USSDA in 2013... Took All-North Zone Honors in high school... Led the Solar Chelsea 95 squad to state, region and Classic League titles in the U17 division... Named to the 2012 USYSA National Tournament Best Eleven.

Michael Nelson | GK | Katy, Texas

Played club for AHFC 95B, earning a runner-up result in the Region 3 Premier League in 2011-12... Helped lead the team to two state championships... Won the 2010 Region 3 Premier League West title... Took fourth in the USYS National League in 2011-12...Led Seven Lakes High School to a third-place district result in 2012 and a district championship in 2013... Was first-team all-district in 2012 and was the 19-5A district MVP in 2013 while also earning first-team all-state recognition... Served as team captain in 2012 and 2013.

Nicholas Petrucelli | MF/D | Austin, Texas

Played for Lonestar SC Academy in the US Soccer Development Academy from 2010-12... Father Chris is the head coach of SMU's women's soccer team while his sister Gabrielle is a midfielder on the team... Lettered two years in lacrosse at St. Stephen's Episcopal School. 

Caleb Underwood | GK | Flower Mound, Texas

Played for FC Dallas Development Academy under former SMU soccer great Luchi Gonzales... Also played for Flower Mound Marcus High School ... Helped lead his high school to a District championship in 2009... Won four state cup titles, a Gothia Cup title, Disney Cup Championship and a Dallas Cup title... Also participated in the 2008 Helsinki Cup and the Ajax-Aegon Future Cup in Amsterdam in 2010... Played for FC Dallas with fellow recruits Abdul Yassine and Marco Carrizales.

Abdul Yassine | F/MF | Garland, Texas

Played for FC Dallas Development Academy under former SMU soccer great Luchi Gonzales ... Helped lead FC Dallas to a conference title in 2012-13 and advanced to the playoffs for two straight seasons... Played at FC Dallas with fellow 2013 recruits Marco Carrizales and Caleb Underwood... Was a member of his high school's honor roll and student council.

Jonathan Zabasajja | D | Phoenix, Ariz.

Played club for Real Salt Lake (AZ) in the US Soccer Development Academy... Led RSL (AZ) to a second place result in the West Conference of the USSDA in 2013, starting 14 of 16 games... Was recently called up to play with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer in a reserve game against the Vancouver Whitecaps...Led Brophy College Prep to a state title in 2010-11 and a runner-up result in 2011-12.
