DALLAS (SMU) - After announcing the addition of a pair of transfers for the 2014 season, Head Coach Tim McClements has added five incoming freshmen to the Mustangs' roster. Bryce Clark, Colten Habecker, Jared Rice, Avery Miller and Garrett Welch are set to join SMU in the fall.
"We are very excited for this group to join us on the Hilltop," McClements said. "We're bringing in players who cover multiple positions and have the ability to make an impact right away."
Bryce Clark | MF| Los Gatos, Calif.
Clark, who is set to graduate from Los Gatos High School, is a member of the San Jose Earthquakes Academy, which competes in the United States Soccer Development Academy. As a member of the academy's under-18 squad, Clark started 16 of 21 matches and helped the team to a wildcard playoff berth during the 2012-13 Academy League season. He also served as team captain for an Earthquakes' side that finished fourth in the Major League Soccer Generation adidas Cup. Bryce has gained great experience playing in the Major League Soccer reserve league, which allows amateur players in an MLS academy to participate with professionals. According to topdrawersoccer.com, he is a four-star player and the No. 16 recruit in the California/Hawaii region. Clark was also named a Scholar of Distinction in each of his six semesters at Los Gatos.
McClements on Clark: "Bryce is a very technical box-to-box midfielder. He will fit extremely well into our system of play."
Colten Habecker | F | Douglassville, Pa.
The 2013 Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year led The Hill School to a 2013 Mid-Atlantic Prep League and the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association championships. The Hill School was named the No. 1 prep soccer team in the United States by studentsports.com. Habecker also set the single-season scoring record at The Hill School with 34 goals. A member of the Lehigh Valley United soccer club, Habecker has helped his team to three Pennsylvania state championships, as well as an appearance at the 2013 USYSA National Championship. Habecker also represents Pennsylvania on the Region I ODP Team.
McClements on Habecker: "Colton has been a proven goal scorer. He will look to make an immediate impact during his freshman year and challenge the program as a frontrunner on offense."
Jared Rice | D/MF | Plano, Texas
Rice is rated as the No. 28 and No. 105 recruit in the United States by collegesoccernews.com and topdrawersoccer.com, respectively. He plays for the Dallas Texans Academy that competes in the US Soccer Development Academy. Starting 25 of 26 matches during the 2012-13 season, Rice helped lead his team to a third place finish in the central league en route to a playoff berth. He has competed internationally in Spain and England.
McClements on Rice: "Jared is an elite college soccer prospect. He has the ability to impact our program immediately at multiple positions."
Avery Miller | GK | Yakama, Wash.
Miller is a member of the Crossfire Premier Soccer Club of the US Soccer Development Academy, and was selected to participate in the US National Team Combine as one of the nation's top goalkeepers. A four-star prospect rated as the No. 9 player in the Pacific Northwest region by topdrawersoccer.com, Miller started 30 matches for his club team that earned a playoff berth during the 2012-13 season. In 2012, he was selected to participate in the Academy Select Game at the Academy Winter Showcase.
McClements on Miller: "Avery is a west coast product with great experience in the US Youth National Team program. He has the ability to come in and challenge to be a starter."
Garrett Welch | D | Houston, Texas
Welch currently plays for US Soccer Development Academy member Houston Dynamo Academy. Welch helped lead the U-18 Dynamo Academy to a wildcard playoff berth, and fourth place finish in the Texas region during the 2012-13 season. A starter of 26 of 30 matches on the pitch, he is also a member of the National Honor Society, and was named to the Principal's Honor Roll for his work in the classroom.
McClements on Welch: "Garrett is a hardnosed defender who's very tough in the tackle and has the ability to perform as a freshman."
These five student-athletes will join transfers Nick Ruiz and Danny McQuaid, who were recently announced as transfers to the Mustangs' program.
