LEXINGTON, Ky. (SMU) - The SMU men's soccer team was defeated by Kentucky, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex. With the loss, SMU is now 9-6-1 on the year and holds a 3-3-1 mark in Conference USA.
Kentucky jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals at 1:25 and 8:00.
The game was very physical, with Kentucky earning a straight red card in the 28th minute and yellow cards in the 55th and 59th minutes. The red card was issued after a Kentucky forward intentionally took out SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra. Ibarra finished out the first half, but was replaced by backup keeper Juan Robles in the second half. The minutes were Robles' first game action as a Mustang.
The Mustangs outshot the Wildcats 18-7 and had a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. SMU had several quality scoring chances as senior Arthur Ivo hit the crossbar in the 25th minute, and sophomore Robbie Derschang missed just wide right after running down the left side and beating the keeper with a low ball on the ground in the 57th minute.
SMU closes out the regular season with Senior Night against Memphis on Nov. 4 at Westcott Field at 7 p.m. Seniors Joe Cooper, Diogo de Almeida, Payton Hickey, Ivo, Ian Kalis, Ryan Rosenbaum and Adam Still will all be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Individual game tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Blocks of 50 or more tickets are $1 apiece. Tickets can be purchased online at SMUMustangs.com or by calling 214-SMU-GAME (214-768-4263).
