TULSA, Okla. (SMU) - An early second half goal proved to be the match-winner for SIU Edwardsville as it went on to defeat the SMU men's soccer team, 1-0, at the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Classic on Friday evening. The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA rankings, improved to 3-0, while the Mustangs fell to 0-3.
Junior Christian Volesky's deciding goal came in the 47th minute after he beat Mustang senior goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra inside the six-yard box. The tally was his fourth of the season.
SMU outshot SIUE 8-6 in the contest, including a 6-1 advantage in the opening half. Senior Juan Castillo led the Mustangs with three shots, including one on goal. Sophomore Leobardo Vazquez had the only other SMU shot on frame.
Ibarra had a pair of saves in a complete 90 minutes of action.
The Mustangs are back on the pitch on Sunday when they take on Ohio State for the final game of the Tulsa Classic. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. with live stats available.
