DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team played Oklahoma City Energy FC to a 1-1 tie at Westcott Field on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Brody Hickey scored the equalizing goal for the Mustangs with just over five minutes to play in the match to give SMU a tie against the USL opponent. The Energy is the USL Pro affiliate of 2013 MLS Champion Sporting Kansas City. The USL Pro is the third highest professional league in the US Soccer Pyramid.

Oklahoma City’s goal came in the 32nd minute on a shot from just outside the six-yard box for the first-half lead. SMU almost immediately evened the score when junior Damian Rosales hit the crossbar from nearly 25 yards out.

“I thought we put together another good performance,” Head Coach Tim McClements said. “We were organized and disciplined in our defense in the first half and generated some excellent chances.  We were especially dangerous on the counter attack.”

The Mustangs opened the second half with an opportunity from freshman Stanton Garcia. Garcia took a shot from outside 25 yards that forced a save from the Energy goalkeeper. Fellow freshman Abdul Yassine was able to get on the end of the rebound, but the second attempt was cleared away.

The teams exchanged chances for the majority of the second half until freshman Brody Hickey connected from 30 yards out for the equalizer.

“We lost our way a bit in the second half but I was proud that the guys continued to battle and fight for the eventual equalizer,” McClements said.

Freshmen Caleb Underwood and Michael Nelson split quality time in the goal for SMU.

“I felt that the result was fair.  OKC Energy FC are going to be a really good USL pro team in their inaugural season.  It’s important to not get carried away with spring results but this is another good building block as we prepare our team for next season,” McClements added.

The Mustangs are back in action for their final spring match on Saturday, April 5 when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face the Golden Hurricane. Kickoff is to be determined.
