Garrett Gilbert broke five school records on Saturday

DALLAS (SMU) – After breaking five single-game school records on Saturday, SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. In addition, senior wide receiver Jeremy Johnson and Gilbert also earned national honors for their performances on Saturday, as the duo was honored by the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and the College Football Performance Awards.
Gilbert completed 45 of 70 passes for 484 yards and five touchdowns and added a pair of rushing touchdowns as SMU erased a 35-14 fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime against Rutgers. Gilbert threw three TD passes, as well as the tying two-point conversion, in the fourth quarter and ran for two touchdowns in the overtime periods. He finished the day with school records in attempts, completions, passing yards, total offense (498 yards) and touchdowns responsible for.
Outside of his conference honor, the senior quarterback was also named to the honorable mention list for College Football Performance Awards Week 6 National Quarterback of the Week and the honor roll for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
Johnson was named the National Player of the Week by the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and the National Wide Receiver of the Week by College Football Performance Awards.
Johnson also etched his name in the SMU record books on Saturday, tying the school record with 18 receptions and breaking the SMU record with 217 receiving yards. The senior captain had a career-high three TD catches, including two in the fourth quarter. The preseason All-American Athletic Conference third-team selection also tied the SMU record with his fourth career 10-plus reception game.
Gilbert also found Johnson in the back of the endzone on the game-tying two-point conversion with 1:19 to play in regulation.
The Mustangs have a week off before making their first out-of-state trip of the season when they travel to Memphis on Oct. 19. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT and will air on ESPN Regional (KTXD in the DFW Metroplex).
