DALLAS (SMU) - SMU sophomore Bryson Dechambeau was named one of GolfWorld's "Top 50 Male Players To Watch", the publication announced Thursday.
Dechambeau recorded five top-five finishes in 2012-13, including a runner-up result in the Conference USA Championship. He earned PING All-Central Region honors, and was a First Team All-C-USA member while receiving the C-USA Freshman of the Year award.
More recently, Dechambeau dominated in two victories this summer. He won the Trans-Mississippi Championship by five shots and took medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Championship Qualifier at Schaffer's Mill Golf Course in Truckee, Calif., by six strokes. Dechambeau also had a runner-up result at the California State Amateur in June. In his win at the Trans-Miss Championship, Dechambeau defeated a strong group of players including the individual NCAA Champion from 2013, Max Homa of California.
Dechambeau advanced to match play in the U.S. Amateur Championship earlier this month by tying for sixth in the stroke play portion of the event.
SMU is ranked 21st in the preseason GolfWorld/Nike Golf poll, and is 16th in the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings. The team's first tournament is the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in Chicago, Ill., Sept. 13-15.
