La Grange, Ill. (SMU) - Sam Fidone shot a 4-over 146 (71-75) to finish fourth at the US Amateur Qualifying event held at Edgewood Valley Country Club in La Grange, Ill. Fidone becomes the fourth member of SMU's men's golf team representing the Mustangs at the U.S. Amateur Championships, joining Matt Schovee, Max Buckley, and incoming freshman Bryson Dechambeau.

Schovee claimed medalist honors at Sectional Qualifying at the Country Club of Colorado and will play in his first U.S. Amateur. He shot a 5-under 137 (70-67) to earn the berth. Buckley has experience in the event, having defeated two top-10 amateurs in reaching the quarterfinals of the 2011 Amateur.

More recently, Dechambeau shot a 9-under 135 (67-68) to finish second in his qualifier at Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

Last season, Fidone was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman team after posting three top-20 finishes, including a third at the John Burns Intercollegiate.

SMU has had three golfers win the U.S. Amateur - Kelly Kraft (2011), Colt Knost (2007) and Hank Kuehne (1998).

The 112th US Amateur Championships will take place Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
