Incoming Freshman Earns Way Into US Amateur Field

FRESNO, Calif. (SMU) - Bryson Dechambeau, an incoming freshman for the 2012-13 season, has landed a spot in the US Amateur Championships after a strong performance at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno, Calif. He shot a 9-under 135 (67-68) to finish second in the qualifier.

Dechambeau was the No. 42 ranked high school golfer in 2012. The Clovis, Calif., native was named the 2011 Player of the Year by the Junior Golf Association of Northern California. Dechambeau won the 2010 California State Junior Championship and finished runner-up in 2011.

SMU now has three golfers participating in the US Amateur Championship.

Matt Schovee claimed medalist honors at Sectional Qualifying at the Country Club of Colorado and will play in his first U.S. Amateur. Schovee shot a 5-under 137 (70-67) to earn the berth. Also playing in the event will be Mustang Max Buckley, who defeated two top-10 amateurs in reaching the quarterfinals of the 2011 Amateur.

SMU has had three golfers win the U.S. Amateur - Kelly Kraft (2011), Colt Knost (2007) and Hank Kuehne (1998).

The 112th US Amateur Championships will take place Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
