Dechambeau Battles On Day One At Palmer Cup

WALTON-ON-THE-HILL, England - SMU's Bryson Dechambeau went 1-1 on day one of the Palmer Cup at Walton Heath Golf Club, pairing with Stewart Jolly to defeat Scotland's Jack McDonald and James Ross 1-up in the morning match and partnering with Anthony Maccaglia and falling 1-up to Pep Angles and Louis Tomlinson in the afternoon.
In the morning, Dechambeau and Jolly fell into an early hole when they conceded the first hole and lost the fourth, but five-straight holes won moved them to 3-up thru No. 9. McDonald and Ross battled back to 1-down after winning Nos. 12 and 15, but the Americans held on for the victory after both sides parred the last three holes.
In the afternoon, Dechambeau and Maccaglia held a 1-up lead on three occasions, last holding the lead thru 13. But beginning at No. 14, Europe won three straight holes to surge ahead, 2-up. Team USA cut the lead to 1-down with a birdie at No. 17, but both sides parred No. 18 to give Europe the 1-up victory.
Overall, Europe claimed the final two matches of the four-ball session to take a 5.5-4.5 lead at the end of day one.
Third-round singles matches tee off Friday at 9 am.
