FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs are set to head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA Regionals at the Blessings Golf Club. The three-day event will take place May 16-18 and consists of 14 five-man teams and five individuals.
The Mustangs will have had 23 days to prepare for the NCAA Regionals since their second-place finish at the Conference USA Championships. The top-five teams and the top individual not on a top-five team will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will take place May 28-June 2. Head Coach Josh Gregory thinks his team is ready for the challenge and will perform well at Blessings.
"We are excited to compete," Gregory said. "This is my favorite time of year, and the guys are fired up and ready to go. The Blessings will be an extremely difficult golf course. It puts a premium on driving the ball as well as grind and patience, which are all things we have been preaching and practicing all year. We are prepared and will have fun and do our best to get in contention and have a chance to win."
Bryson Dechambeau, Austin Smotherman, Mario Clemens, Harry Higgs and David Lee will be the Mustangs' lineup in Fayetteville. Dechambeau was First Team All-C-USA, while Clemens and Smotherman made the Second Team. Clemens also won Newcomer of the Year, while Dechambeau, Smotherman and Lee were all selected for the All-Freshman team. Dechambeau finished second at the C-USA Championship, and Clemens placed fifth.
No. 13 Arkansas hosts the Regional, and No. 5 Texas, No. 16 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Kent State, No. 32 Illinois, No. 40 Liberty, No. 45 Tulsa, Kentucky, Colorado, Indiana, UNC-Wilmington, UMKC and Alabama State will join No. 21 SMU to try to make their way to the NCAA Championship in Atlanta, Ga.
