IRVING, Texas (SMU/C-USA) - The SMU golf team earned two selections to the Conference USA postseason teams as Max Buckley was named to the All-Conference Second Team and Sam Fidone was selected to the All-Freshman Team.
Buckley capped off the regular season of his final year on the Hilltop with the top two performances of collegiate career. Last week, the senior shot a season-low 209, tying for second place at the C-USA Championship, one shot out of first. A week earlier, he pulled off the first individual medal of his career, winning the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate.
On the year, the Rye, N.Y., native had nine top-20 finishes, including four in the top 10. The senior had the best stroke average of his career at 72.71, shaving nearly two and half off strokes off of last season's average. He shot 22 rounds of par or better and had seven rounds in the 60s.
Fidone had a successful freshman season, finishing in the top 20 three times while averaging 74.56 strokes per round. The highlight of his season came at the John Burns Intercollegiate where he tied for third at 5-under par (211). The Lufkin, Texas native led the tournament through two rounds after shooting a 68 in the first round and a season-low 67 in the second.
The Mustangs are currently awaiting word on their NCAA Regional berth, which will be announced May 7.
