TEXARKANA, Ark. (SMU) - The 21st-ranked SMU Mustangs are aiming for nothing short of victory at the Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark. starting this Sunday.
The Mustangs are the highest-ranked team in the field, and are one of three top-50 squads that will converge upon the Texarkana Country Club. Houston (29th) and Tulsa (40th) are also in the top 50 of the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings. SMU last won the C-USA title in 2006, and the team cherishes the chance to win the last championship before the school changes conferences next season.
"We are excited to compete," Head Coach Josh Gregory said. "We have had a solid year; the only thing missing is a win. It would be an honor to win our last Conference USA championship. The Conference USA is probably the most underrated conference in college golf. We are looking to gain momentum and confidence heading into the NCAA postseason."
The top two individuals in the event are UCF's Greg Eason (ranked 26th) and SMU freshman Bryson Dechambeau (47th). The rest of the Mustangs' lineup includes Austin Smotherman, Mario Clemens, Harry Higgs and David Lee.
The championship shall be three days, with 18 holes scheduled for play each day. Playing partners for the first day will be determined by a blind draw. For every succeeding round, team scores will determine pairings. The winner gains an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
