DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs men’s golf team will host the 2014 Payne Stewart Cup at the Brook Hollow Golf Club on Monday. The annual fundraising event will feature an 18-hole round of golf with current and former SMU golfers, PGA professionals and SMU supporters and donors.
Among the professionals competing will be Hunter Mahan (five PGA Tour wins), Jordan Spieth (recently tied for second at the Masters, winner of the 2013 John Deere Classic), Martin Flores (PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour participant) and Harrison Frazar (one PGA Tour win). Former SMU golfers and now professionals Kelly Kraft, Colt Knost and Chris Parra will play, as well as Henrik Norlander, who helped lead Augusta State to two national championships in 2010 and 2011 under now-SMU head coach Josh Gregory.
After the completion of the round, a cocktail hour will commence followed by an auction and a dinner with guest speaker Lee Trevino (six-time major winner, 19th all-time on the PGA Tour win list). AT&T will again serve as the title sponsor for the event which will raise over $140,000 for the SMU men’s golf program.
“We are very excited about this year’s Payne Stewart Cup,” Gregory stated. “Our goal each year is to make it bigger and better. We have a full field in addition to several PGA Tour professionals and local club professionals as well.”
Gregory also commented how important it is for SMU to continue to the tradition that is the Payne Stewart Cup.
“It’s very special to honor Payne Stewart and all he meant and still means to SMU golf,” Gregory said. “This is a special day for all of our supporters, former players and current players. It’s also a day where we can promote our vision and the future of SMU golf.”
About the Payne Stewart Cup:
Established in 1999, the Payne Stewart Cup is the primary fundraising event for SMU Men's Golf. In honor of Payne Stewart's commitment to SMU, the tournament bears not only his name and his likeness, but his spirit as well.
Held annually at a select, premier course in Dallas, the event features top business executives, former Mustang golfers, SMU Alumni and fans from the DFW region and beyond.
Having raised more than 1.5 million dollars in support of SMU, The Payne Stewart Cup regularly attracts nationally-renowned speakers and PGA Tour professionals.
About Payne Stewart:
Payne Stewart, one of the most popular professional golfers in history, was an 11-time PGA Tour winner, a three-time major champion and a 1979 graduate of SMU. Stewart played golf at SMU from 1975-79 and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity on campus.
Stewart won the PGA Championship in 1989 at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Long Grove, Ill. After entering the final round six strokes off the lead, Stewart carded a final round 67 to win the Championship by one shot. Stewart also won two U.S. Open titles; in 1991 in a playoff over Scott Simpson and in 1999 by one stroke over Phil Mickelson.
The Springfield, Mo., native passed away just four months after his second U.S. Open victory as a result of a plane accident in Florida. In 2000, the PGA Tour established the Payne Stewart Award, given each year to a player who shows respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of charitable support and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.
Stewart was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 and the SMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
