PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) - SMU sophomore Bryson Dechambeau earned American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week honors, the league office announced Wednesday. Dechambeau tallied his sixth top-five finish of the season at the Valspar Invitational at Floridian, placing fifth at five-under par.
The Clovis, Calif., native carded a first round score of 67 and finished the event with a 69 to move up to fifth on the leaderboard among a stacked field that included eight top-25 teams and and 13 teams ranked in the top 50 in the GolfStat rankings.
Dechambeau, who is on the Ben Hogan Award watch list, is ranked 10th in the nation according to GolfStat and 17th in the world on the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Dechambeau has 15 rounds of par or better this season and ranks first in the nation in last round scoring average. He earned a runner-up finish at the National Invitational Tournament in Tuscon, Ariz., on March 16, and posted four straight top-five finishes to start the fall.
"Anytime you get recognized it's pretty cool and it means you're doing something right," Dechambeau said. "Even though I haven't won yet, I feel I am on track and I am very excited for our next event."
SMU has placed in the top five in three straight tournaments, tying for fifth at the Floridian. In all, SMU has six top-five results in eight tournaments and has moved into 25th in the GolfStat team rankings. The Mustangs will be in action next at the Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate on April 11-13.
