BANDON, Ore. (SMU) - The 15th-ranked SMU Mustangs men's golf team will travel to Bandon, Ore. for the Bandon Dunes Championship this Friday through Sunday.
SMU placed third at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 19 in the team's most recent event. The Bandon Dunes Championship boasts a strong field of 18 teams, including 4th-ranked Washington and 6th-ranked UCLA. The event is taking place at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
"We are very excited to play at one of the finest golf resorts in the world against a very strong field," Head Coach Josh Gregory said.
The weather conditions are expected to include strong gusts of wind and brisk temperatures, which Gregory believes will provide a good learning opportunity.
"It will be a great challenge playing in the cold and wind, and especially on a links-style course," Gregory said. "Anytime you can play outside your comfort zone it makes you a better player. This is a great opportunity for us to get better and start our four events over the next month heading into the postseason."
Making the trip for the Mustangs will be Bryson Dechambeau, Mario Clemens, Austin Smotherman, David Lee and Harry Higgs. Dechambeau is currently listed as a top-50 player in the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings, ranked 44th.
The Bandon Dunes Championship is a three-day event and is hosted by Gonzaga.
