May 16, 2013
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) - Mario Clemens carded three birdies over the final nine holes to finish tied for seventh at two-under after the first round at the NCAA Regionals at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. SMU finished the first day in seventh, two positions out of a qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships. SMU will have to make up seven strokes over the next two days to advance.
The Mustangs got off to a rough start, holding a nine-over score through six holes. The squad was able to stay at even par the rest of the day to maintain its nine-over score.
"We kept ourselves in the ball game," Head Coach Josh Gregory said. "This is an extremely tough golf course and the wind is supposed to blow the next two rounds. There is a lot of golf left for us with three freshmen playing in their first NCAA Regional. Tomorrow we should be more confident and play better."
David Lee was the second-best Mustang on Thursday, finishing at two-over. Lee eagled the par-5 16th hole and finished the front nine at even par.
Illinois is first at six-under par. Texas is three shots back in second, followed by Oklahoma State, Kent State and hosts Arkansas. Colorado is sixth, five strokes ahead of SMU.
