TEXARKANA, Ark., (SMU) - Coming off of the first tournament win of his Mustang career, Max Buckley continued his momentum today, shooting a 4-under, 68, in the first round of the Conference USA Championship at the Texarkana Country Club. While the senior is tied atop the leaderboard, No. 41 SMU is in second, two shots back of No. 42 Memphis.
Buckley started off the day strong, picking up birdies on his first two holes. After a bogey on No. 6, the senior gained the stroke back with a birdie on the following hole. At 2-under par through 12 holes, Buckley got on a roll, sinking brides on three of his next four holes. A bogey on the final hole ended his day at 4-under par.
Sambol began the morning well, going 3-under through seven holes, but gave back the strokes with bogeys on No. 8, 12 and 15. With birdies on No. 12 and 14, Schovee was sitting at 2-under with four holes to go, but bogeys on his final two holes brought him back to even par.
The Mustangs will be paired with Memphis and Marshall in tomorrow's second round. The teams are slated to tee-off at 8:50 a.m. CT.
