PALM CITY, Fla. (SMU) - Bryson Dechambeau carded a final round 69 to move up to fifth place overall, leading SMU to a top-five finish at the Valspar Invitational at Floridian after the final round on Tuesday. SMU tied for fifth with Arkansas at four-under par for the tournament.
The Mustangs finished ahead of three top-20 teams in the event - No. 8 Houston, No. 9 Illinois, No. 12 Florida State and No. 16 UCLA. SMU now has six top-five finishes in tournaments in 2013-14.
Dechambeau finished the event at five-under par and was one of just three players in the top 10 to shoot a final round in the 60s. Austin Smotherman tied for sixth overall at four-under, earning his second top-10 finish of the season. Smotherman rallied back after posting two double-bogeys in the opening nine holes to shoot a one-over 72 for his final round.
As a team, SMU shot seven-over par on Tuesday, a day that saw only three teams record rounds of par or better and which the average score went up by three strokes from the opening round on Monday. Ryan Burgess posted his best score of the tournament, tallying a two-over 73 with four birdies.
Fourth-ranked Georgia Tech won the tournament by eight strokes over No. 3 Oklahoma State. No. 21 Texas A&M placed third, with LSU taking fourth. No. 19 Arkansas tied with SMU for fifth, three strokes ahead of No. 12 Florida State and No. 8 Houston, who tied for seventh. No. 9 Illinois and Tennessee rounded out the top 10. In all, eight teams in the tournament entered the event ranked in the top 25 of the Nike/GolfWorld Coaches' Poll and the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings, and 13 of the 15 teams are ranked in GolfStat's top 50.
Next up for SMU is the Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., which begins April 11 and concludes April 13. More information is available here.
