Mustangs In Fifth After First Day At Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (SMU) - Freshman Austin Smotherman shot a four-under 68 and is tied for second after the first round at the Puerto Rico Classic. Mario Clemens is also in the top 10 as SMU sits in fifth place.

Smotherman had eight birdies to put himself in contention for the win after day one. The freshman was six-under after 15 holes, but double-bogeyed the par-4 16th to fall back to four-under par.

As a team, the 17th-ranked Mustangs sit at one-under in fifth place, just one shot shy of No. 10 Georgia Tech in fourth place. Of the 15 teams in the Puerto Rico Classic field, 14 are ranked in the top 100 nationally.
