Football fans in the state of Texas fondly look back and reminisce about the glory days of the old Southwest Conference. It was such a unique conference because at one point it was comprised entirely of teams from Texas. A conference such as this made it easy for each school to consider the others their rivals. One such rivalry was SMU-Texas. Between 1916 and 1995, these two schools met 73 times including some of the most memorable games and players in school history. In 1924, SMU claimed their first victory over the Longhorns in one of the 90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History.
In 1923, SMU had won their first Southwest Conference championship by finishing the season a perfect 9-0. Texas had also finished the 1923 season undefeated with a record of 8-0-1 and runner-up to the Mustangs. It just so happened that they did not play each other that season. It was not until 1924 that SMU and Texas would play every season. The Longhorns felt that they had been robbed of a chance for the conference title and strongly believed they were the best team in the state.
Both teams started the 1924 season the same way they had finished the 1923 season, by winning every game they played. The two schools finally met on October 18, 1924 in Dallas to settle the score. Texas came into the game very confident having not lost a game since November 30, 1922. However, the Mustangs also had not lost game since that same date. In the first three meetings of this series, Texas had won by a combined score of 127-3. SMU entered the game believing that a victory would validate them as one of the premier teams west of the Mississippi River.
It was a fierce game as both teams relied on their defenses to shutdown the potent offenses. Neither team was able to find the end zone until SMU running back Logan Stollenwreck took a toss around left end for a couple yards and the only touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter. SMU held off a late charge by the Longhorns to win 10-6. The win put SMU's unbeaten streak at 14 games while ending Texas' at 12. The win was also a major factor in SMU being invited to play in the Dixie Classic on New Year's Day. The first win over Texas in 1924 takes its place as one of the 90 Greatest Moments in SMU Football History.
