The Austin, Texas, native was one of eight quarterbacks to be named a Manning Award Star of the Week. Fans can vote for Gilbert on the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook Page to determine the Manning Award Player of the Week. Voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
On Sunday, Gilbert also became the first SMU player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since the award started in 2004.
Gilbert was also on honorable mention lists for National Quarterback of the Week as named by College Football Performance Awards and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award committee.
Classmate Keenan Holman was on the honorable mention list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, and was named the National Wide Receiver of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. The senior wide-out also earned honorable mention American Athletic Conference honors.
Holman had 10 grabs, a career-high 209 receiving yards and a career-high three touchdowns. The Beaumont, Texas, native's yardage total was fourth on SMU's single-game list and his 20.9 average per catch is second all-time at SMU (min. 10 receptions).
SMU is back in action Saturday, Nov. 9 when the Mustangs travel to Cincinnati for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff.
