IRVING (C-USA/SMU) - SMU freshman Margus Hunt has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, October 12.
Hunt blocked two field goal attempts in SMU's 28-21 win over defending C-USA Champion East Carolina, one of which led to a 65-yard touchdown return. It was the first field goal block for a TD by SMU since Oct. 13, 2001. Hunt also blocked a 23-yd field goal attempt in the first quarter, his second straight game with a blocked kick (PAT at TCU).
Hunt was also awarded an ESPN Helmet Sticker for his work as he helped the Mustangs jump out to their first 2-0 start in league play since 1986.
The 6-8 native of Estonia is in his first season playing football, but won gold medals in both the shot and the discus at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, becoming the first junior athlete ever to win a shot/discus gold medal double.
