DALLAS (SMU) - SMU senior Stephon Sanders has been named to the Butkus Award Watch List, the organization announced today. The annual award honors the nation's top linebacker.
Sanders started all 12 games for the Mustangs last season and ranked third on the team in tackles with 86. Sanders registered 13.5 tackles for loss (first on the team), and posted 3.5 sacks. The Mesquite, Texas, native also tallied SMU's only safety of the season against Montana State, and also collected a career-high 11 tackles in the same contest.
The Watch List contains 51 candidates, honoring the now-retired professional jersey of Dick Butkus, who is regarded as the best defensive player in football history. The selection panel is comprised of 51 coaches, evaluators and journalists, coordinated by Pro Football Weekly.
