Jan. 18, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU linebacker Ja'Gared Davis will play in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game on Sat., Feb. 2. Davis is the sixth Mustang to be selected for a post-season all-star contest, joining Bryan Collins (Casino Del Sol), Aaron Davis (NFLPA), Margus Hunt (Senior Bowl), Zach Line (Shrine Game) and Taylor Reed (NFLPA).
Since June Jones' arrival on the Hilltop, 10 former Mustangs have gone on to play in the NFL: Thomas Morstead, Emmanuel Sanders, Bryan McCann, Aldrick Robinson, Sterling Moore, Cole Beasley, Josh LeRibeus, Richard Crawford, Taylor Thompson and Kelvin Beachum.
Davis finished the 2012 season ranked third on the team in tackles (77) and second with 11 TFL. He notched two interceptions, forced three fumbles and recovered two fumbles. Davis was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after a dominant performance in the win over Tulsa when he forced and recovered a fumble, and made an interception. He was huge in SMU's win over SFA, recording nine tackles, a sack, 1.5 TFL and a 34-yard fumble return for a TD. Davis also returned an interception for a TD at UTEP, his fifth career score (three fumble returns, a blocked FGA return and an interception return). He wrapped up his senior campaign with a six-tackle, two-sack performance in SMU's 43-10 Hawaii Bowl win.
The Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game is a post-season college football all-star game that was established in 2006. Each team consists of approximately 54 draft-eligible players, representing Division I, II and III college football teams from all over America. Each year the NFL, CFL and other professional football leagues send over 200 scouts, front office personnel, senior executives, and coaches to evaluate the talent and to attend special events. From the previous five games that have been played, over 100 players have been selected in the NFL Draft and more than 500 have signed with NFL teams.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CST at Eagle Stadium in Allen, Texas.
