GRAPEVINE, Texas (SMU) - Ryan Smith, a senior football player, participated on the Student-Athlete Perspectives: What Does INCLUSION Really Mean panel at the 2013 NCAA Convention at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine on Wednesday, January 16. Smith along with six other current and former student-athletes from various sports offered their perspective on inclusion and its importance in shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics.
"This was a great experience and opportunity that I'm very fortunate and blessed to be selected. It's rare to have a panel of student-athletes with such diverse backgrounds. I learned so much from my fellow panelists that I can take back to our campus and help be part of bridging the gap to an inclusive environment" stated Smith.
The panel was organized by the NCAA's Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Based at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion is responsible for leading the Association in the development and implementation of strategies, policies and programs that promote diversity and inclusion throughout intercollegiate athletics. The department values all voices, advocates for a future without barriers and an atmosphere of common purpose, and aims to create an active dialogue within the national office and the membership about issues related to diversity and inclusion.
