DALLAS (AP) -- Garrett Gilbert threw for 353 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores to lead SMU past Memphis 44-13 Saturday.
Gilbert scored on a short run after Memphis had pulled within three in the third quarter, and his 10-yard scramble put the Mustangs up 30-13 in the fourth. The 353 passing yards were a career-high for Gilbert and his passing efficiency rating of 165.6 was the second highest of his career.
Zach Line rushed for 127 yards on 23 attempts and a touchdown for SMU (4-4, 3-1 Conference USA). Line moved into third place on the SMU career rushing list with 3,751. He surpassed the former Mustang great Craig James who had 3,743 career rushing yards during his stellar career on the Hilltop.
Darius Johnson had nine receptions for a season-high 141 receiving yards. Johnson's big day moved him into fourth place on the SMU career receptions list with 210 career grabs.
Brandon Hayes had 55 rushing yards and scored the only touchdown for the Tigers (1-7, 1-3).
Trailing 16-13 after a 13-play field goal drive, Memphis sacked Gilbert on SMU's first play of the second half. On the next snap, Johnson turned a short pass from Gilbert into a 70-yard gain, and Gilbert stretched across the goal line on third-and-goal from the 2.
SMU is back on the road next week when it travels to Orlando, Fla. to face UCF. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. For tickets to the game visit smumustangs.com/tickets.
