Tulane Spoils SMU Comeback in 41-34 OT Loss

DALLAS (AP) - Tulane's Matt Forte scored on a nine-yard run in overtime and finished with a Conference-USA record 342 yards on 38 attempts to lead Tulane to a 41-34 victory over SMU in overtime on Saturday night.
After Forte scored his fourth touchdown of the game, the Green Wave defense sealed the win when Reggie Scott forced a fumble by SMU quarterback Justin Willis on the Mustangs' first offensive play of overtime. Avery Williams recovered.
SMU forced OT when Willis threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Zach Sledge with eight seconds left in the game. Willis completed 28 of 36 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns.
Forte gave Tulane a 34-27 lead when he scored on a five-yard run around the left side with 4:38 left.
SMU tied the game at 27 after Thomas Morstead hit a 37-yard field goal with 7:35 left to erase a 10-point fourth quarter deficit.
Forte's scoring runs included a career-long 77-yard run in the second quarter and a nine-yard run with 2:12 left in the third quarter which gave the Green Wave a 27-17 lead.
Willis threw first-half touchdown passes of 26 and 17 yards to wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders scored on a 17-yard screen pass with 8:51 left in the second quarter for a 17-7 SMU lead. Sanders led all receivers with a career-high 155 yards on eight receptions.
