HOUSTON (AP) -- Michael Harris scored the winning basket with 1:30 left in overtime and Jason McKrieth had Rice's first triple double as the Owls beat SMU 66-64 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both clubs on Thursday night.
Harris, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds, scored the game-winner on a feed from McKrieth, who finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
Rice (6-3) trailed 35-28 at halftime and took its first lead when Brock Gillespie hit a 3-pointer with 14:30 left in regulation.
The Owls were up 52-45 after Gillespie's second 3-pointer with 8:49 to play, but the Mustangs came back to tie the game at 58-58 on a 13-6 run.
Lorenzo Williams gave the Owls a 62-60 lead on a 3-pointer with 2:02 to play, but SMU's Justin Isham hit a 14-foot jumper with :01 on the clock to force overtime.
Eric Castro opened overtime with a basket to give the Mustangs a 64-62 lead, but SMU was held scoreless for the rest of the period.
Jamaal Moore got inside for a layup to tie the game before McKrieth hit Harris for the winning shot.
J.R. Harrison had 14 points for Rice.
Bryan Hopkins led SMU (5-4) with 20 points, while Castro and Patrick Simpson each had 12. Derrick Roberts added 11 points.
