Mustangs Shoot 56.3 Percent in 74-57 Win Over Texas State

DALLAS --- Four players scored in double figures as the SMU Mustangs defeated the Texas State Bobcats 74-57 at Moody Coliseum Saturday night. Eric Castro, Patrick Simpson, and Bryan Hopkins each had 16 points while Justin Isham added 13 in the win. The victory moves SMU to 3-2 on the season, including a 2-1 home record.

The Mustangs shot a season-best 56.3 percent from the field, including 65.2 percent in the second half. Castro paced the team on 8-of-9 shooting. His eight field goals tied a career high from games at Nevada on Feb. 13, 2003 and at Baylor Nov. 27, 2001. Derrick Roberts shot 4-of-5 to score eight points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds. Bryan Hopkins was 5-of-11 from the field, with all five of his field goals coming from beyond the three-point line. He also led SMU with seven assists. Simpson also hit half of his attempts, going 5-of-10 from the field.

The Ponies shot 71.4 percent at the free throw line, going 15-21 for the game including 12-14 in the first half. Isham hit 7-of-8 and Simpson hit 6-of-8. Isham tied his career high for made free throws from games against Baylor Dec. 21, 2002 and versus Texas-Pan American Nov. 22, 2003.

SMU capitalized on the boards, outrebounding the Bobcats (2-2) 37-23 on the night. Roberts (10) led the way followed by seven from Devon Pearson, six for Castro, and Simpson had five. The Mustangs have a 15.7 per game rebounding advantage in their three victories this season.

Simpson got closer to a couple of milestones with his performance. He is now nine points from becoming the 32nd Mustang to score 1000 career points. He also had two blocks to give him 123 for his career. He is just behind Reggie Franklin, who is third in school history with 129.

The Mustangs next game is a visit to rival TCU. The game at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum is Sunday Dec. 12.
