BOZEMAN, Mont. --- The SMU Mustangs scored the first eight points of overtime en route to a 69-61 extra session victory over the Montana State Bobcats (0-2) at Worthington Arena Monday. The run was capped by a three-point play by Ike Ofoegbu with an Eric Castro assist at 2:59 of overtime. Jon Killen started the scoring with a field goal at 4:29 and Devon Pearson nailed a three-pointer at 3:36.
The Mustangs rallied from a five-point deficit in the final seconds of regulation. Derrick Roberts hit a three from the left wing with 12 second left to pull SMU within a pair. Eric Castro drove the lane with five seconds left, receiving a pass from Justin Isham and laying it in to tie the game.
The Mustangs moved to 2-0 on the season, winning the overtime after Patrick Simpson and Bryan Hopkins had fouled out in the final minutes of the second half. Simpson tied his career high with 23 points and added 12 rebounds for the 10th triple-double of his career. Bryan Hopkins had six points on the night, all in the second half, to go with five assists and eight rebounds.
Castro played 42 minutes, finishing the game with 15 points, nine boards, three steals, and two blocks. Devon Pearson had a career-high nine rebounds to go along with 12 points in the game. SMU out-rebounded the Bobcats 54-25 in the game and had 19 offensive boards.
The Mustangs' next game is against No. 7 Oklahoma State Monday Nov. 29 at Moody Coliseum at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at smumustangs.com.
