DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU men's basketball coach Matt Doherty named Mouhammad Faye, Derek Williams, and Paul McCoy as team captains for the 2009-10 season. Doherty made the announcement during the annual Tip-Off Dinner held Thursday night at the Royal Oaks Country Club. Practice officially begins Friday.
Williams, a senior guard, was named co-MVP last season along with McCoy. Williams led the Mustangs with 3.5 assists and was second in scoring at 12.7 points per game. He also averaged 4.0 rebounds and just under one steal per contest.
Faye, a senior forward, was third for the Mustangs in scoring last season (9.6) and second in rebounds (5.2). Over the summer, he helped lead Senegal to a 5-4 record and seventh-place finish at the FIBA Africa Championships. Faye averaged 17.3 points for the tournament to rank seventh. He also averaged 3.8 rebounds per game and shot 46.7 percent from the field.
McCoy, a sophomore, was selected preseason All-Conference USA by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. As a freshman, he made the C-USA All-Freshman Team and was a two-time C-USA Rookie of the Week (Nov. 24, Feb. 16). He became the first freshman to lead SMU in scoring (13.4 ppg); and tied the SMU freshman record by leading the team in scoring 12 times.
The 2009-10 schedule includes at least 11 games against 2009 postseason teams. The Ponies host 17 home games at Moody Coliseum, including eight games against Conference USA foes. The season starts with six consecutive home games, beginning with South Florida on Nov. 13 and Texas A&M on Nov. 16.
